The NEC Mobilegear is the Japanese equivalent to the English version of the NEC Mobilepro with a few differences. First of all, the color schemes of the devices are different. The silver and dark gray colors of the Mobilepros are generally replaced with a tan and light gray color scheme, some with navy blue. Yet the design is near identical in most all of the devices. In some devices the rom chips can actually be swapped out with the Mobilepro equivalent. Also the keyboards are different since the Mobilegears support the Japanese standard keyboard layout which includes extra keys and come printed in both English and Japanese characters. Also the Japanese units have additional software support for the common Japanese MG or Postpet mail system.
Some of the Mobilegears have no western counterpart as they were inproduction only a very short time. These are normally OS upgrade devices, but some of them have slightly different hardware additions such as a fingerprint reader built into the HPC. Here are the Mobilegears with their model numbers and how they compare to the Mobilepros.
MC/R730F (CE2.11) = Same as MP880, but no CF slot, has fingerprint reader instead
MC/R730 (CE2.11) = Same as MP880
MC-R700 (CE2.11) = Same as MP800
MC/R550 (CE3.0) = Same as MP790
MC/R530 (CE2.11) = Same as MP780
MC/R450 (CE3.0) = No counerpart
MC/R430 (CE2.11) = No counterpart, essentially a MP780 without modem or vga out, has Postpet instead of MG Mail
MC-R520 (CE2.11) = No counterpart
MC-R510 (CE2.01) = No counterpart
MC-R500 (CE2.01)= Same as MP750C
MC/R330 (CE2.11) = No counterpart
MC/R320 (CE2.11) = No counterpart
MC-R300 (CE2.01) = Same as MP700
MCS13, MCS12, MCS11 (CE1.0) = Same as MP200, MP400, MP450
MC-K1, MC-K11, MC-K12, MC-K22, MC-K32 = No counterpart, touchscreen pda that doesn't use Windows CE, uses MSDOS and/or proprietory shell
MP-P1, MP-MP11 = No counterpart, touchscreen pad device that doesn't use Windows CE, uses MSDOS 320x240 pixel display
Other HPC devices built by NEC include the DoCoMo Sigmarion I (HPC Pro) and II (HPC2000), but these HPCs are unique in their size as they are smaller and have no relationship with Mobilepro or Mobilegear even though they are electronically identical. |
