Overview: For all practical matters, these three units are nearly identical. The all sprout 480W x 240H pixel resolution...atypical by today's standards. The all run Windows CE v1.0, though CE v2.0 was available as an upgrade for the 400/450 units via chip replacement. They all use dull and hard to see STN screen technology. All were limited to 4 shades of color...gray/green shades. So how did they differ? The MP200 has only 2mb of ram, while the 400/450 both have double that...4mb. The 450 differs from the 400 by the inclusion of a backlight. Also the latter models also had an option docking cradle for serial synchronization with a Windows desktop. If you obtain one of these however, realize that you will be unable to use Activesync for synchronization...these were made back in the Windows CE Services days of Windows 95. Serial sync was the only option for these devices. Since none of them has a compact flash slot, the only memory cards were the ATA PCMCIA memory cards...and using a CF PCMCIA adapter is the method that most people use to add software to these old devices today. Nonetheless despite their limitations, these were the only NEC HPCs that could be considered pocketable. With a 61 key keyboard (non-touch-typeable), and a complete v1.0 Pocket Office suite containing early versions of PocketWord, PocketExcel, and various PIM...the devices seemed to meet the needs of those who owned them. Often found on eBay these days selling for $15-$20, it is hard to imagine a time when the 450 sold for nearly $800.
