Overview: The Mobilepro 700 was a gigantic leap for NEC. Not only did it sprout a faster cpu (54mHz compared to the older 33mHz), but it featured a much larger screen. This with the new Windows CE v2.0 was quite an evolvement from the older NEC HPCs. The screen became the HPC standard of 640W x 240H pixels in size. While nicer and larger, the color depth did not change...still 4 color shades. The memory however doubled from the 450...now a whopping 8mb of ram coupled with a 16mb rom. Most importantly was the keyboard size which became the standard for NEC. Finally a machine that was touch-typeable for even big hands with a full 80 key keyboard. It was the first HPC from NEC that featured a VGA out port for showing on external monitors. It also featured a built in 33.6kb/sec internal modem and a CF (compact flash) slot as well as the PCMCIA slot. Battery life was lengthed by the use of NiMH type batteries though AA still could be used. This was the last of the b&w Mobilepros, and is by far the rarest in the world to find. They often sell for in excess of $150 even today. Perhaps this is due to the numbers manufactured...few in comparison to other NEC HPCs. If you can get one, and you are a collector, then this is the one to boast about owning. The STN screen is viewable in direct sunlight...something that the DSTN screens of the color Mobilepros to follow could not claim. Specifications:
