The Mobilepro 770 and 780 - View more pictures HERE
Overview: They are virtually twins. Their difference lie primarily in a few hardware upgrades. The 770 runs slower and displays fewer colors than the 780. But that is about it really. They are so similar that many of the parts are interchangeable. Actually the lcds, keyboard, main case halves (both top and bottom) are completely swappable for repair. Even the batteries and a/c adapters are the same. The rom and ram chips are different, and you cannot mix them up as they mount differently. But everything else is the same. But that is as far as it goes. Using the machines you notice a really big big difference. The 780 flies in comparison to the 770. Viewing websites is much better because of greater numbers of colors the 780 displays over the 770 in standard mode. I say standard mode because with some applications, both machines will display more colors than in native mode. 65K more to be exact. The 770 started a new style of NEC HPCs that would follow through to the 790 before we saw another design change. Both machines kept the same proprietory serial cable socket as the 750C. Both have CF and PCMCIA slots. But both also included upgraded soft modems from 336kbs to 56kbs. I say softmodems because the modem was controlled through software rather than a specific hardware encoded device. The 780 is by far the most popular HPC in the world for NEC...or at least it was until the 900 series started hitting the streets. But even years later they are readily available on eBay. While the 780 improves over the 770 in all realms, the 770 should not be discounted. It is a perfect machine for those who are getting started at a discount rate. Still powerful enough for most applications, its age is only as critical as the user's needs. Both machines would be the last Mobilepros to use Windows CE v2.11. The next Mobilepro, the 790 would introduce the HPCs to CE v3.0, a welcome change.
The Mobilepro 790
Overview: The Mobilepro 790 was NECs first HPC to run a true Windows CE v3.0 operating system. This proved to be a great enhancement in many aspects. Not only could it run all the previous HPC programs, but could also support some of the newer pocketpc CE v3.0 applications. Most noticeable to 790 users was the enhanced version of Internet Explorer. Many of the web site that were not viewable properly because of security measures could now be accessed with the 790. The manufacturer claimed newer versions of the Pocket Office applications as well, though nothing that the user would probably notice. There were some enhanced control panel options such as easily defining quick launch keys and a few other nice software add-ons such as newer versions of bFax and bUseful Backup, but the most important change was not software at all. It was a hardware change. For the first time the Mobilepro had non-volitile flash ram. This means that even in the event of a catastrophic power failure, compete power drain to the main and backup batteries, anything stored on the internal drive area (14mb useable) would remain intact. This made it a perfect place to store important documents and system backups. Storing data there meant it was easy to retrieve it in an emergency, and it freed up normal ram space for other use.
