Overview: Until the 900 series came along, the heart of all the other Mobilepros was the MIPS processor. Eventually over time, a new design came along, the SA or strong arm processor. It offered faster speed and a larger instruction set to meet the demand of newer applications. The SA processor eventually evolved again to the PXA255 which is instruction set compatible with the SA cpu. The 900/900C use the newer PXA255. This meant a loss of compatibility with any program that was made for the MIPS cpu. Luckily nearly all authors made SA compatible versions so really nothing was lost. The 900's operating system, HPC2000 was what everyone was used to with the 790. It is essentially identical with a few invisible changes. Of course hardware differences such as more ram and faster processing made the 900 more desireable. When the 900C came along with it's advances CE.NET 4.2 operating system, the game changed radically. Now there was a full 6.0 version of Internet Explorer. And the OS included viewers that allowed the user to view desktop versions of Word and Excel. Many people were disappointed that the old HPC2000 office applications were no longer there however. They missed the spellchecker in Pocketword, and other things such as the HPC2000 PIMS (personal information management) utilities that seems lacking or downsized. More importantly the CE.NET machine no longer ran the vast array of HPC2000 software since the dlls all changed. This was soon overcome however by manually copying those dlls over to the 900C. This also meant that you had to make a choice...a 900 with HPC2000 or a 900C with CE.NET. That is a moot point now. Some intrepid uses, CMonex primarily, have "ripped" the HPC2000 pocket office applications and made them installable on the 900C. Now you had the best of both worlds. To further enhance the hardware, we have since that time learned to flash or rom module, which means that we can add or remove applications for the core of the machine. Flashing means you never have to reinstall it again...it becomes a permanent part of the system in the event of a hard reset. This means everyone can customize their 900C exactly the way they want it...to fit their individual needs.

Mobilepro 900 and 900C Bonus CD Information: If you buy a used 900 or900C, you will want to obtain the bonus cd that contains all the goodies. The number to obtain the Mobilepro Applications CD is 866-632-8061. The part number for the MP900 is 819-050760-000. The part number for the MP900C is 819-050776-000. The cost for the CDs are the same, $12.00 US. Just dial the number and listen to the options. You want option #2

Mobilepro 900C IE6.0 and Jeode Java: First, it only works with the 900C, not the 900. One of the more popular web page programming languages is JAVA. When you view these pages using the Microsoft Internet Explorer built into the 900C, you will oftentimes get a screen that has blank or empty boxes. This is because IE doesn't support, or only has minor support for Javascript pages. However, with the popularity of Javascript, many third party companies produced their own versions of software that allowed viewing or running programs written in JAVA. Many pocketpcs come with these interpreters built into the unit, but the HPCs didn't. Some of those third party companies wrote versions that integrate well into the built in IE. Jeode Java is one of them. Unfortunately this software is not available anywhere on the web that I know of, though it is occasionally available from people who originally purchased it and no longer have a use for it and sell it at an online auction. I installed such a copy onto my 900C, the Jeode Java from Insignia. It is very transparent, that is it works without any invocation from the user. Of course nothing is perfect, but this version of Java is very good and of the majority of Java enabled sites I visited, it worked well. If you can find a copy, I strongly suggest grabbing while you can if Java compatibility is of importance to you.

Mobilepro 900C DLLs and ROM Flash Information: Dynamic Link Libraries, commonly called drivers. They enable your Mobilepro 900C to run software written for the older HPC operating systems. The programs that make calls to these libraries will not run without them. For instance, programs written for HPC Professional (CE 2.11) look for the mfcce211.dll, and HPC 2000 (CE 3.0) software looks for mfcce300.dll. Other programs like Nyditot Virtual Screen look for the toolhelp.dll. There are essentially two ways you can make your 900C compatible with the older software. The first way is to simply copy these files into your Windows folder. A few programs such as Laridian Pocket Bible and Pocket On-Schedule also have to have registry changes made in order to display the programs properly. Particularly you must copy the webview.dll and htmlview.dll into the Windows folder and then import the webview.reg file found on HPCFactor's web site. The other way to resolve the missing dll problem is to have them permanently as part of the operating system. This means to flash your rom module. This requires a ROM flash file and a compact flash memory card. This information can also be found within the forums at HPCFactor.
